Reggie
Disability Pride Month

July is Disability Pride Month, which is dedicated to recognizing and honoring the identities, culture and contributions of people with disabilities. This year, we are excited to share Reggie’s story and the positive impact that Easterseals PORT Health’s (ESPH) Individual and Community Services (ICS) has had on his life. We are also highlighting his exciting experience with the 2024 Special Olympics of North Carolina (SONC). Reggie’s journey embodies joy and community, making his story a perfect celebration of Disability Pride Month!

The Special Olympics of North Carolina, held in the heart of Raleigh, was filled with interactive games, arts and crafts and fitness challenges. All of the athletes of SONC have intellectual disabilities. This lively event provided a vibrant space for athletes like Reggie to connect and celebrate. Reggie eagerly engaged in various activities such as hanging out with his peers and bowling! Additionally, Reggie participated in the SONC’s “Partner Up Power Up” activities. These are weekly online video call activities presented by the Special Olympics of North Carolina program, focusing on healthy habits such as exercise and healthy eating. He also participated in “Olympic Town” on NC State’s University campus! “Olympic Town” consisted of a hearing test, sight test, dental screening, as well as exercise tests such as balance, strength and stretching. For Reggie, the Special Olympics is a cherished opportunity to form friendships and experience a sense of belonging, perfectly reflecting the impact of his involvement with ESPH’s Individual and Community Services!

Reggie and his mom, Joyce, have been an integral part of our ICS family. Joyce has witnessed Reggie’s happiness and personal development, thanks to the individualized support and community inclusion provided by the ICS team. Joyce says, “I have worked with the ICS team since the pandemic in 2020. They have taught me to treat Reggie as an adult with special needs, dreams and wants, not just my ‘adult child’. Based on his goals and expectations, he sets them each week with help from his ICS team. I always ask and discuss activities that he is involved in.”

Reggie’s story serves as a beautiful celebration of Disability Pride Month, highlighting the joy, resilience and sense of community experienced through events like the Special Olympics and support from our ICS team. As we continue to recognize Disability Pride Month, let’s celebrate the diverse experiences and contributions of individuals with disabilities!
