Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Did you know that nearly 5 million Americans have a developmental disability? That’s nearly one in 66 of the entire US population! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in six children ages 3-17 have a developmental disability.

The CDC defines “Developmental Disability” (DD) as a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. These conditions begin during the developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime.

The impact of developmental disabilities on an individual can vary widely, with some requiring support throughout their lifetime, while others may only need occasional assistance. With tailored support, many individuals with DD can become quite independent. Some of the most common developmental disabilities include: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, hearing loss, ADHD and visual impairment.
