Early Intervention

Early intervention can reduce needs later in life

Every year, Easterseals UCP provides service coordination, direct education and developmental assessments to more than 600 infants and toddlers with developmental delays and disabilities and their families in North Carolina and Virginia. Our services can occur in your home, at daycare, in the community and use a parent/caregiver coaching model.

Trust your instincts! If you think something is not quite right with your child’s development, please contact us to learn more about early intervention.

A few common signs of developmental delays include:

  • Not crawling by 10 months.
  • Not walking by 15 months.
  • Not using words by 18 months.
  • Difficulty transitioning from the bottle.
  • Does not socially engage with peers.

We support families to empower them as advocates and parents. We meet families “where they are” to build rapport and create the trusting relationship needed to best support the child. Working with parents, we help monitor a child’s overall development and also help them obtain the tools they need for successful parenting.

A team-based approach to support families

Service Coordinators

Your first point of contact. We assist families in identifying a child’s developmental goals, support families in accessing resources to help reach their goals and connect them with community resources. We also help families coordinate therapies and track developmental progress.

Developmental Educators

We work with children and families toward reaching the goals of their individualized family service plan. We coach families in best practices for helping their child meet the identified goals. We help track developmental progress. and provide extra support as needed.

Graduation

When a child no longer shows delays and reaches the goals of their individualized family plan, they will “graduate” from Early Intervention. However, some children have a medical diagnosis that automatically qualifies them to continue the program until the day before their third birthday. We can also assist families in exploring eligibility for special education preschool services at their local elementary school.

Here’s what parents are saying…

“It’s wonderful to report that my son no longer requires services!”

“My son and I worked with Hope multiple times a month. She is incredibly kind, patient and thorough. She clearly cares about kids and also their parents. I felt supported, never troublesome, even when I had a long list of questions and concerns. My son has flourished and I’m incredibly thankful to Hope and Easterseals UCP for their Early Intervention help.”
