On July 26, 2022 the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) turns 32! Join us in celebrating the anniversary of this monumental event and the important work to promote equal opportunity for people with disabilities.

What is the Americans with Disabilities Act?
Enacted in 1990, the ADA provides civil rights protection for individuals with disabilities and mental health challenges and guarantees that everyone has the same opportunity to be included and thrive in their daily lives. The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in various ways ranging from employment, public transportation and accommodations, access to the digital space as well as access to state and local government programs and services.

ADA compliancy can apply to many different circumstances. One example of ADA compliancy includes installing a ramp to make a workplace wheelchair accessible. Another example could be using alternative text on the images of a website to that individuals with visual impairments can access information.

Thanks to the Americans with Disabilities Act, many individuals with disabilities and mental health challenges are able to reach their full potential. While the ADA has helped individuals with disabilities access information and amenities, maintain employment and thrive in their daily lives, there is still more work to be done. We strive every day to make the world more accessible and inclusive for all.
